Person-centred therapy
A safe space to be truly heard
Person-centred therapy is a gentle, human approach that places you at the heart of the process. It’s about understanding your experiences, emotions and perspective, at your pace, in your own words.
Rather than being analysed or directed, you’re supported to explore what feels most important, helping you reconnect with yourself and discover your own way forward.
This approach builds self-trust, confidence and a deeper sense of acceptance. It’s not about ‘fixing’ you. It’s about helping you uncover the strength and clarity already within.

How person-centred therapy works
Person-centred counselling is grounded in empathy, acceptance and genuine understanding. Your therapist listens deeply and without judgement, creating a relationship where you feel safe to open up and explore your inner world. In practice, that means:
- You decide what feels most important to talk about
- Your counsellor listens with empathy and respect
- You’re encouraged to explore your thoughts and emotions freely
- You begin to rebuild trust in yourself and your intuition
Over time, this process helps you make sense of difficult emotions, heal old wounds and reconnect with your natural capacity for growth and balance. Person-centred therapy is particularly helpful if you’ve struggled to feel seen or understood in other parts of your life.
Why choose person-centred counselling
Because this approach begins from where you are, it’s gentle, flexible and deeply personal. You won’t be pushed or judged. You’ll be supported to move at your own pace with honesty and compassion.
Your therapist doesn’t tell you what to do; instead, they walk alongside you, helping you reconnect with your values and uncover the answers that already exist within you.
After person-centred therapy sessions, many people find that they:
- Feel calmer and more emotionally grounded
- Understand themselves and others with greater clarity
- Make decisions that align with their true needs and values
- Experience relief from anxiety, stress or self-doubt
Person-centred therapy often brings a sense of lightness and self-acceptance — not through advice, but through being deeply heard and understood.
“SMC helped me to find strength after feeling lost”
When I started counselling with Shirley Marais, I felt completely lost after a painful breakup. I’d spent years trying to ‘get over it’, but nothing worked. Through person-centred counselling, I learned to understand my emotions instead of pushing them away.
Over time, I found confidence again and began making choices that truly felt right for me. Thank you.
